Owerri Girls Secondary School started in 1955 and has been the leading school in the archdiocese of Owerri and Imo State respectively. The first principal of the school was Rev. Mother Labore, an Irish Reverend sister.

The proprietor of the school is Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, the archbishop of Owerri archdiocese and his auxiliary, Most Rev. Moses Chikwe.

The administration of the school is in the hands of daughters of Mary, Mother of Mercy (DMMM) Sisters with Rev. Sr. M. Esomchi Ifeoma Cecilia Nwokeafor as the current principal.

The school is blessed with qualified and experienced teachers. The students are trained to be well disciplined, academically, morally and socially balanced personalities for a better tomorrow which they showcase when they attend external examinations and inter school competitions.

Owerri Girls Secondary School operates day and boarding. Boarders live in different hostels according to their classes and interact with one another as one family. Day students attend school daily from their respective homes. Also, there are stipulated rules in regulations guiding the students.

The school has a well equipped clinic with qualified and experienced nurses that attend to the students as the need arises.

Owerri Girls Secondary School is a Roman Catholic School that accommodates other denominations. Mass is celebrated daily by the school Chaplain while moral instruction is being conducted every Thursdays.

Our goal is to groom the younger ones to be successful in every good thing they do. We continue to Excel in teaching and learning and to make Owerri Girls Secondary School a world class institution.
